let it go

I made Ezra watch Frozen tonight.  And, of course, he protested at first, “Frozen is dumb,” “it’s for kids,” “can we watch a different Disney movie?” but ten minutes in (before Elsa had even been coronated, mind you, he was all “this is such a good movie,” pausing his video game to watch. And it…

And it made me smile.

See, before I insisted on a light, happy Disney movie, we were watching the movie Zodiac. And, for someone who enjoys her work at a prosecutor’s office, I am not a true crime junkie. I never watched Dahmer or researched other serial killers. I grew up in Wichita, Kansas, so I know a decent amount about BTK, but never intentionally looked into him, because I like sleeping at night thank you very much.

So, we get thirty minutes into Zodiac, and don’t get me wrong, the law and prosecution side of my brain is working, but the human side of my brain is shaking like a chihuahua in the corner.

And the human side of my brain is winning out. It’s dark, it’s scary, and being in a young couple seeing that as the target victim is absolutely terrifying. So, naturally, I ask Ezra if we can change the movie.

This week is a LOT okay. My case file for mock trial dropped. I had an urgent research project for my externship due today. My Biz Orgs professor started talking about the midterm today. I have three projects due at my externship in the next couple weeks. Not to mention the normal law school readings and all. Plus, the normal living stuff of making sure I am eating properly, working out, taking care of the dogs, texting my friends back (don’t ask me how many unread texts I have) (it may or may not be over 500) (oops). Long story short. Life is a lot. And it would be amazing to have a few extra hours in the day.

But! Back to my point. I ask Ezra, my amazing boyfriend, if we can change to something happy. We’ve been pretty into nature documentaries recently. But he notices something is still bugging me, and asks if I’d rather watch Frozen. Which, of course, I say yes. Because I love nature docs, but sometimes you just need to nurture your inner child to undo the scaries of the day. Or, more accurately, the scaries of the 30 minutes of the movie before.

So, as we turn on Frozen and he stops playing his game to watch, it made me smile and realize that, even when busy and overwhelmed, I always have people in my corner. People like him. People like my best friend, Sarah, who lives literally a thousand miles away. So, while this is a short post today, it is because I am taking my own advice of taking a break and watching a childhood favorite with my lifelong favorite person (and our two pups).
